There's a famous seaside town called Blackpool that's noted for fresh air and fun. And 65 Golf Society members and their guests took their buckets, spades and golf clubs to St Anne’s Old Links for our 2012 season opener.

Dry underfoot, it was an ideal venue for a curtain raiser. Minimal winds led to some great scoring with the colourfully attired Mark Goodwin of Hays Energy taking an early club house lead. This 7 handicapper returned an excellent 40 points, but his bright pink trousers and blue top clearly affected the scoring of Vice-Captain Timothy Roberts (I-COM). Or that was his excuse at any rate...

The Captain Michael Sweeney (Good People) got an excellent par on the first hole, but found he had peaked too soon as his front 9 began to resemble Arthur Scargill golf - great strikes, but poor results.

Once again President Franklin Sinclair (Tuckers, Solicitors) was the bridesmaid and not the bride for the nearest the pin competition, being jilted from the prizes by Nick Holt (PSL Print Management) who was a part of the day's final grouping. This is getting to be a bit of habit for Franklin. ‘Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action’ this usually most genial of members was heard to mutter ominously on departure.

The Society also entertained by living Northumbrian golfing legend and county player Sandy Twynholme, who was the guest of Tony Caisley of TGC Computers. This +2 handicapper and Muirfield Amateur record holder, shot a 4 under gross total to record 38 points, but this was not enough to beat the best visitor’s score on the day from Steve Wood (Valve Instruments Plus) who secured 42 points off 13.   In the main members competition, quietly spoken golf course designer Ken Moodie (16 handicap - Creative Golf Design) plotted his way around this historic links to prevail returning a superb 41 points to triumph.

The draw was also made for the 34 entrants to this year's Millennium Knockout Cup competition, with the sixteen first round ties being played at members’ home courses such as Sandiway, Stockport, Dunham Forest, Marriott Worsley Park and Manchester Golf Club. All first round ties are to be completed before our May 17th meeting at Delamere Forest.

Our sponsors The Institute of Customer Management were most generous on the day, even bringing a conditioning coach to enable our movers and shakers to move and shake a little better than they usually do while they assembled on the first tee. Well done and thank you, Adrian Airey of Bodyexcel.

This was a great start to the season then for those Chamber members who love their business and love their golf.  For our April 19th fixture at Stockport, an even bigger field is expected and a two tee start is anticipated so book early to secure your place as the tees are filling fast. Well done to all who took part for starting the season on such a positive and enjoyable note.
